Urban scenography is, by nature, planned waste. Municipalities and brands spend fortunes on steel and plastic decorations that, after 30 days, generate a massive environmental liability. How to deliver the visual enchantment and monumental scale that Christmas demands, but transform the "climate expenditure" into a verifiable carbon sink?

The Project Journey
The Year-End Festivities' "Hangover"
When the city of Cascavel planned its Natal de 2025, the challenge was not merely aesthetic. There was growing pressure for socio-environmental responsibility (ESG). The market standard for scenographic mega-structures is steel. If the project had followed the traditional playbook, more than 14 tons of steel would have been necessary. The impact of this choice would be invisible to the public but brutal for the atmosphere: mining, blast furnaces, and intensive machining. It was the classic recipe for a post-event "environmental hangover."
Mathematics as a Design Tool
Bambusa Atelier took on the project, replacing steel with almost 3.8 tons of bamboo. D'Terra consultancy was hired to conduct a comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), using OpenLCA software and metrics from the UN climate panel (IPCC 2021).

Carbon Sink Engineering
The report laid bare the data. Steel would emit +57,585 kg of CO2. Bamboo, being a fast-growing biomass, acted like a "sponge." It sequestered -6,017 kg at the farm. Even after adding emissions from cutting, freight, and factory electricity (+1,469 kg), the project's net balance was negative: -4,548 kg of CO2. Bamboo not only neutralized the project; it removed carbon from the atmosphere.

In addition to the climatic impact, the analysis revealed that the project directly addressed 7 UN Sustainable Development Goals, including sustainable cities, decent work, climate action, and life on land, transforming the scenography into a comprehensive public policy tool.

What We Learned
The Cascavel 2025 case proved that set design can be a strategic tool in combating climate change:
Set Design is the New Frontier of Corporate ESG: Municipalities and major brands no longer need to offset the carbon from their events by purchasing third-party credits. This case proves that the event's architecture itself can be the offsetting tool. Bamboo set design ceases to be a "cost" and becomes a "climate asset."
Lightweight Material = Lower Logistics Impact: Steel would require transporting over 14 tons. Bamboo delivered the same visual volume weighing only 3.7 tons. This lightness not only facilitates manual assembly (reducing the risk of accidents and eliminating the need for cranes), but also nullifies the impact of freight on highways.
Planned End-of-Life: The D'Terra report highlights the Circular Economy. While steel recycling requires furnaces at extremely high temperatures, bamboo set design, at the end of festivities, is 100% biodegradable, compostable, or reusable, generating zero toxic waste for the municipality.
